Continent of Africa
Did you know that the continent of Africa holds the largest river and desert? Ask your student what these are. They should also be able to tell you that the continent is divided into four regions. It was also once connected to South America. Africa is home to Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in the world.
Language Arts
In October, we will be beginning our first novel as a class. The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, written by Christopher Paul Curtis. It is about civil rights and what was happening in our country during this time. The novel is a Newberry Honor winner, as well as a Coretta Scott King Award winner. This is the first of three novels that we will read this school year as a class. They will also be expected to read their own free reading books and during each trimester they will be required to present their own book project. There are many ideas and projects to choose from so be sure to ask them what they plan on presenting for their own book project. These books will be at their reading levels based on their Lexile scores from their spring NWEA reading results. Projects will be presented in November before the end of the trimester.
